Cambridgeport Construction

Randy Milburn’s background in church restoration combined with Jim Burke’s degree in mechanical engineering shines brightly in Cambridgeport Construction’s stellar portfolio of renovations. Remodels, which include a cleverly transformed Georgian-style house in Brookline with a cedar-clad dry sauna, exude unfussy elegance and gorgeous craftsmanship inside and out. The icing on the cake? Architects confide that Cambridgeport Construction’s operation is leaner than that of flashier firms, resulting in less cumbersome paperwork for homeowners and better value all around.

These revered builders deliver the complete package. Bob Ernst, who has served as the Boston company’s president since 1995, has been known to personally walk potential clients through every line item of a bid. Plus, dedicated onsite foremen ensure quality work (column-adorned bathrooms, gleaming custom kitchens, party-ready wraparound decks) and maximum efficiency throughout the renovation process. Designers value FBN’s collaborative approach, while homeowners appreciate the weekly meetings that keep them abreast of budgets and timelines. One designer noted, “I never walked on site to find a surprise.” We believe it.

Premier Builders’ Ken Kumph treats every job, large and small, with equal attention, and his way of doing business trickles down. Crew members are not only attentive, punctual, and respectful, but a pleasure to chat with whether you’re after a simple bathroom upgrade or a full-home renovation. Bonus: The company’s robust in-house woodshop turns out artisanal-level architectural millwork and custom cabinetry, so you can rest assured that your project’s finishing touches—from coffered ceilings to luxe built-ins—will be handled with the same care and precision.

Kistler & Knapp Builders

Principals Renée West and Douglas Stevenson of Kistler & Knapp build to impress, carrying on the tradition of the 42-year-old company’s now-retired founders. Case in point: a sprawling farmhouse in Sudbury with a stone-clad exterior, vaulted ceilings, and exposed beams. And then there’s the church turned condo in the South End, complete with arched custom windows, which speak to the group’s technical expertise. There’s nothing, it seems, this well-loved firm can’t do.

Custom Furniture
Saltwoods

For the team at Saltwoods, crafting tables, benches, and kitchen islands isn’t just about giving customers beautiful, one-of-a-kind furniture. It’s about a connection between client, craftsmen, and the planet. It starts with materials—often reclaimed oak sourced from downed trees or centuries-old deserted barns—that, as finished pieces, display the geographic coordinates of their source. The level of care and attention to detail doesn’t stop there, though: The same craftsmen who built your piece will also personally deliver it to your home.

So You Want To…Build a Mudroom

We reckon there’s not a household out there that wouldn’t benefit from one of these storage-friendly beauts. Start planning this most critical of additions with pointers from Colin Flavin, founding principal of Flavin Architects.

Ponder the Path
To be used fully, the mudroom should be located on the daily path into the home. This is often off the garage or a secondary entry. Ideally if there are multiple paths from outside, they will converge in the mudroom.

Focus on Function
Think about how you will use the space, which will help you determine your needs. Is your home a full-time residence calling for the storage of office attire, for example, or is it a weekend house in Vermont that requires hiding spots for skis, boots, and bikes?

Survey Your Style
Open shelving is good for finding things quickly, but is better suited for those who are comfortable with clutter. Closed shelving or hanging space, on the other hand, is neat and tidy looking, but it’s harder to know what lurks behind a door.

Have Fun with Finishes
Choose materials that can withstand moisture and take a beating. Painted finishes can work, since they can be readily touched up. I also recommend using exterior finishes like galvanized metal that look great inside and wear well.

Patina

For Pauline Curtiss, every facet of an interior is a canvas. She can add stenciled motifs, abstract graffiti explosions, and serene landscapes anywhere you let her (hello, two-story statement foyer). Working closely with her small team, this RISD grad turns bare floors into “rugs,” walls into rich “suede,” and wood into “tile.” She’ll even camouflage a bedside table to disappear against your bedroom wall. Extra points for her gorgeous porcelain dinnerware, adorned with delicate, hand-sketched patterns.

Coastal Architect
Jill Neubauer Architects

From porches and pool pavilions to bunkrooms and bathhouses, Jill Neubauer captures the spirit of coastal living with designs that celebrate both togetherness and solitude. A new Brewster home, for one, boasts loads of entertaining space on the open-concept first floor, wrapped in two sides of glass, while the owners’ suite invites peaceful refuge with an ocean-facing private deck. But the Harvard-trained architect isn’t just concerned with aesthetics: Neubauer also honors the environment, not only by making the most of water views and natural light, but by aiming for sustainability.

Here’s a thing you didn’t know about Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask: He trains on cardio and strength machines from Precision Fitness Equipment, headquartered in Framingham. Why? Perhaps it’s because of the staff who guide customers (famous and not) toward the right bench, elliptical, or interactive recumbent bike from brands such as Powerblock, Matrix, and WaterRower, while sharing advice on proper use. Or maybe it’s because the team offers design consultations, transforming lackluster home gyms into inviting spaces with members-only vibes. Either way, you’re in good company.

So You Want to…Revamp Your Home Office

You feel incredibly fortunate to work from home but could really use a change of scenery. Sound familiar? Read on for a few easy ways to refresh your workspace, courtesy of Ideate Design Studio’s Sashya Thind.
Let There Be Light
There’s no substitute for natural light—especially in an environment where you’re potentially working eight hours or more a day. Find a sunny spot, and if you have a view of the outdoors, go for it.
Pick a Good Chair
Working from home has its perks, but we all know that we end up spending way more time sitting at our desks than we would if we were traveling to an office. An ergonomic chair is more comfortable and can reduce back pain. Some great brands that we recommend to our clients are Herman Miller, Steelcase, and Haworth, which have multiple models you can test.
Get Organized
Being able to put stuff away at the end of the day leads to a space that is peaceful and welcoming the next morning. A small file cabinet on castors, for instance, can tuck under the desk to store extra stationery, pens, and files. Cable management is also important to hide unsightly wires.
Don’t Forget to Decorate
Displaying art or framed photographs immediately creates a warm and inviting space. A fresh coat of paint can transform a room, too—just make sure you go with uplifting colors instead of dark, saturated ones.

Style Spotlight: Transitional

Transitional Architect
Arazi Levine Design
Israel-born Dana Arazi Levine has amassed quite the following since establishing her Boston studio in 2017—and it’s easy to see why. The pro’s schemes showcase an impressive blend of architectural training and killer interior-design instincts, resulting in spaces that feel both timeless and contemporary. Take, for instance, this issue’s feature on a historical Back Bay condo [page 50], which—thanks to Levine’s thoughtful intervention—pairs resized rooms, scaled for how we live today, with classic details like molding and mahogany paneling.

So You Want to…Overhaul Your Patio

Ideal outdoor retreats, patios have quickly become one of this year’s hottest commodities. Here, Ashley Bascon, cofounder of Hingham-based Brickstone, shares the secrets to making these trendy spaces truly sing.

Plan, Plan, Plan
If the space does not function for your family or lifestyle, you will not use it as much as you anticipated. Work with a professional who can filter your needs through their knowledge to build the ultimate outdoor environment. Creating an inspiration board can help, too; it guides your vision and gives direction to the contractor.

Embrace Natural Stone
Natural stone is king! We are lucky that New England has an abundance of options. Some of our favorite tried-and-true combinations for patios are bluestone, cobblestone, fieldstone, and peastone. They age well and are proven to stand the test of time.

See the Bigger Picture
Patios alone are great but in order to make a space feel like an extension of your home you must consider all elements, including properly sized furniture, a heat source, and lighting. Seating walls are also useful; they invite friends and family to gather ’round.

Remember Rocks
Never underestimate a perfectly placed boulder. Something so simple can have a huge impact on the landscape. Boulders create great focal points in a yard and are weather-resistant.

So You Want to…Plant a Garden

No green thumb? No problem. Principal of Boston-based Perennial Gardens, Ellen Abdow takes the guesswork out of creating a flora-filled paradise you’ll happily marvel at all year long.

Consider the Conditions
Sun, soil, and water are the trifecta that makes magical gardens; inadequate sunlight, poor soil drainage, or nutritional imbalance will result in unhappy plants. Read the plant tags, test your soil, and monitor and measure your sunlight in each area of the garden.

Create Zones
Define areas for growing herbs and veggies by using shrubs, plantings, or containers to create separation. Draw a plan on paper, and then lay it out on the ground using garden hoses or stakes.

Prep for the Seasons
Gardens need more than summer flowers for year-round interest. In New England, we have many months when hardscaping and evergreens create structure and carry the show. Try to select something that has at least two seasonal moments—spring blossoms, nice fall foliage color, a fruit for birds or wildlife, or a tree with an interesting winter structure or bark. Crabapple trees, for example, have a great bloom and sometimes leave small fruits on their branches that look amazing when covered in a light layer of snow.

Go for Glow
Low-voltage lighting can really add value to a garden. We love hanging bistro lights or uplighting a tree by putting mini spotlights at the bottom, pointing up at the leaves.
